Week One of 599 (The Beginning of the End!)

In our final culminating class, we will be developing a project based on using a technology that we have not used (or only used/covered sparingly) in our cohort up to this point.  With this technology we will be developing a use in our professional life that can hopefully improve our existing situation.  As varsity baseball coach, I plan on using an IPad to hopefully make the way that we record our statistics much more efficient (possibly help other sports convert also).  By using the "Pointstreak Solutions," or some other downloaded application, I will hopefully be able to keep the statistics by simple touches, along with having them in an easy, user-friendly format (without having to manually enter them into a computer myself).  A certain advantage to this project would be the convenience of making my life as a coach easier.  Some drawbacks and hurdles that come to mind would be cost (for the IPad and the application) and the learning curve associated with any new piece of technology.

  1. As a baseball fan, former Little League coach and avid iPad user, I think this sounds like an excellent project. Accurate stats can be an invaluable coaching tool but they are a pain to compile and analyze. Do you have a student team manager who can help with the data entry?

  2. Jared, I think your project focus is practical and will really help you collect the stats for your teams in a forward thinking way. Since this is something new you will be implementing, and there will be a learning curve, will you continue using your traditional system of record keeping as a backup? Or do you plan to just go for it? Good luck!

  3. This is great! I tried something similar with basketball this season. Unfortunately, the app I chose was difficult to use due to the pace of the game. I would recommend checking out the espn iscore app for baseball. It is $9.99 but it does a great job. It will compile all of the statistics and it will actually tweet out the results if wifi or 3G is available. This allows parents to follow the game if they cannot attend. I inserted the link below. I hope that helps and I am certain I will check back to see how everything goes. Good luck on the season.

  4. I love your idea! It would also be great to show your baseball players and have them keep track of their own statistics. This could be encouraging for those to grow and work harder. I would love to see the finish product when you are done.
