We covered a lot of content this week in class, both informative and interesting. The first thing I learned about was a very interesting perspective on the future of education. The Sir Ken Robinson video was very informative and thought provoking. It definitely makes a person rethink their view on the importance of creativity. We also learned, through our textbook, how to approach professional development with technology, along with how to make sure our technology use is in the best interest of our students. We also covered the importance of software evaluation, along with all the "red tape" that comes with purchasing software. Finally, we learned about the various advantages to having a website, built through Google.
The software evaluation, website, and technology plan will undoubtedly have an impact on my teaching. Learning how to use technological tools, along with setting up a site that my students can use will be paramount to a regular incorporation of technology.
I agree with you regarding the red tape. It will always be there and we need to know how to get around it or cut right through it. Knowing more about the process for evaluating software will help us to choosing quality software that will make it from the evaluation process to our classrooms. Did you ever wonder, Will the technology be obsolete by the time it clears evaluation? Could there be a better/quicker way to get software into our classrooms?
ReplyDeleteJared - funny you mention the red tape that goes along with purchasing software. I have yet to meet a teacher who can just go purchase software through the school district. It may be easier now, though, that we have the tools to evaluate software. I think that if I used an evaluation tool and suggested some software to my LMS, I might have a shot at getting something purchased!
ReplyDeleteJared, in response to your comment on my blog, I'm really not sure how you would get everyone to change the mindset about priorities in school. As it is now, it would be a huge undertaking. I guess if more and more information like this video is shared with not just teachers, but parents and community members, maybe there would be a chance to change the way school is run. Will it happen in my career? I'm not sure, because it will take a long time.
